Fifteen

Given the events of the day, somehow Douglas wasn’t nearly as surprised as he might have been when Jacinth’s mother appeared that evening. In fact, he was proud of himself for scarcely blinking at the explosion of sensual beauty into his living room, enveloping them in a cloud of wafting perfume as exotic as she herself was. Taller than her daughter, with a sinuous elegance in marked contrast to Jacinth’s open joie de vivre, Zahra was a sultry enchantress with dark red hair that fell in rippling waves to her waist, framing her lush curves. Slanted eyes of brilliant green, set off by black curving lashes, would have done credit to an Egyptian cat goddess.

“Ya helwa. My sweet.” She swept Jacinth into her arms for a brief embrace, then straightened, looking across the room at Douglas, who had risen to his feet at her entrance. “And this is...?”

If Zahra had a tail, he thought, it would be a-twitch.

“This is Douglas. Douglas, my mother, Zahra.” Jacinth spoke politely... in her ‘nanny’ tone, he thought with some amusement. “Douglas is my Sahib. As I’m sure you know from Kieran.”

Zahra’s emerald eyes glinted with humor. “Oh very well. I admit I’m absolutely dying of curiosity.”

She extended one slender hand across the coffee table. He took her hand, understanding that the handshake formed as much a part of her judgment as the swift, keen scrutiny she sent him from under those incredible lashes. Her skin was cool and soft, lightly scented, not like Jacinth’s, warm and pulsing with life.

Zahra moved away to seat herself in a chair set at right-angles to where Douglas had been sitting on the sofa before her abrupt arrival. She was dressed in an extremely chic tailored suit of cream linen, the jacket open to show a soft green silk blouse that echoed faintly the emerald glow of her eyes. Sheer nylons that Douglas had no doubt were grossly expensive encased her long shapely legs, and the high-heeled sandals she wore were of patent leather. Except for an air of maturity, and the sharp knowledge in the depths of her emerald eyes, she could have passed for a twenty-something fashion model.

“So, tell me everything,” she invited Jacinth, settling herself gracefully in the armchair, her smile encompassing both of them.

“What if you fill her in,” Douglas asked Jacinth, who had resumed her seat on the sofa, “while I make us all coffee?”

Jacinth nodded vigorously and launched into an account of the events since she’d come into Douglas’ life. Douglas escaped to the kitchen, feeling a bit bemused. What had happened to his life? he wondered, measuring coffee into the basket. He’d been a simple kind of a guy, with the usual problems of the ex-wife and custody issues. Except for Lilian having stolen the children, everything had been pretty normal. Then suddenly here he was, with genies.... Djinn... popping in and out of his house. He had a nine-hundred-year-old Persian nanny for his children. Her mother, who looked scarcely older than
